There is also Glenwood Lake and Leslie Lake in the area that have some good fishing to go along with a nice hike. For a short trip to town for things like groceries, gas and family dining the town of Boulder, Montana is about 20 miles away. The town of Whitehall is about 45 miles from the property offering similar stops. The state capitol and city of Helena is about 50 miles away and offers things like big-box store shopping, fine dining, a college and an airport to completely fill your needs. Similarly the town of Butte is roughly 60 miles away and offers many of the same amenities. The town of Elkhorn has a rich mining history that is kept by its well preserved buildings along the town’s main street. The Elkhorn silver mine is one of the nation’s longest operating and richest silver mines running from 1875 to 1951 and producing 8,902,000 ounces. Once the mine reached 300 feet it started to produce significantly with up to $30,000 of ore monthly by 1888. The town used to hold as many as 2,500 residents and had buildings such as 3 hotels, a bowling alley, a barbershop, candy store, multiple school houses, saloons and two fraternity halls that still stand today. The mine also produced an estimated 4 million pounds of lead and 8,500 ounces of gold. Today the town has a few residents, but no amenities. It’s, a quaint place to experience and amazing to imagine what it was like during its heyday.
